Why I'm obsessed with polka dots

· 2 min read

At some point I looked at my closet and realized an unreasonable amount of it was polka dots. I've decided not to fight it. There are actually good reasons, and then there are the real reasons.

They film beautifully

Big spaced-out dots are one of the safest patterns on video. They're large enough that compression doesn't turn them into static, and they give the eye something to follow when you move.

Fine patterns shimmer and crawl. Dots just sit there being charming. A dress with dots the size of a coin will look the same in a clip as it does in person, which is more than you can say for most prints.

They also make movement legible. When the fabric moves, the dots move with it, so a spin actually reads as a spin instead of a dark blur.

They're never fully serious

You can wear something quite revealing in polka dots and it stays playful. The pattern does something to the tone — it takes the edge off without taking the look away.

That balance is hard to find otherwise. Most things read as either sweet or sharp. Dots somehow get to be both, and that's more or less exactly the register I want to be in.

They also carry a bit of history with them. There's a retro pin-up association baked in that does half the styling work before you've added anything else.

White on black, specifically

Black with white dots is my whole personality apparently. It has maximum contrast, so it reads clearly even in low light, and the black holds its shape while the dots do the talking.

The reverse — black dots on white — washes out under a bright light and I've never once been happy with it on camera. It also fights with a light wall, so I lose my outline.

Dot size matters more than you'd think. Coin-sized is my favourite. Much smaller and you're back in shimmer territory; much bigger and it stops being a pattern and starts being a graphic.

How I stop it becoming a costume

One dotted piece at a time, everything else plain. Two patterned pieces together tips straight into fancy dress, and then it's a whole look rather than an outfit.

Silver jewellery over gold with them, usually. And nothing else retro — modern shoes, modern hair. The dots supply all the vintage the outfit needs.

There's no deeper reason. They're cute, they film well, and they make me feel like I'm in a good mood even when I'm not. That last one is probably the actual reason and the rest is justification.
